Public Service Spotlight: Jim Mallon
For Jim Mallon, his 28-year tenure with the County of San Luis Obispo has been more than just a job—it's been a journey marked by camaraderie, growth, and a steadfast commitment to public service. As an Assessment Manager in the Assessor’s Office, Jim leads a dedicated team responsible for appraising all residential properties across the county, ensuring fair and equitable assessments for property tax purposes.
Reflecting on his career, Jim emphasizes that what he values most about working for the County is the people. "It has always been about the people," he shares. "I’ve met some lifelong friends along the way, and I really enjoy coming to work and seeing people grow personally and professionally." Working for the County provided him with the stability that was lacking in the private sector real estate industry of the early 1990s, when he first obtained his appraiser’s license.
Jim's role involves overseeing 16 real estate property appraisers and two supervising appraisers, guiding them in their daily tasks and ensuring the team operates smoothly. Despite the challenges inherent in his job, Jim takes pride in the team's commitment to professionalism and fairness. "We take pride in doing a fair and equitable job for all county taxpayers," he remarks.
Offering advice to new County employees, Jim stresses the importance of seeking mentorship and understanding the organizational culture. "Look toward the more seasoned people in your department for mentorship and guidance," he advises. "Understanding your department’s mission, vision, and values is crucial as you grow into your role within the organization."
Jim’s dedication to public service is deeply rooted in his upbringing; his father’s career in civil service instilled in him a strong sense of duty and professionalism. "I aspire to give my best professional effort every day," he says. "Everyone I come in contact with, whether colleagues, staff, taxpayers, or the public at large, deserves to be treated fairly and professionally."
Throughout his career, Jim has found fulfillment in witnessing the growth of his colleagues from new hires into experienced professionals. "It has been rewarding to see people develop and excel," he reflects. He also values the importance of maintaining a positive work environment amidst the pressures of their responsibilities. "There’s often a lot of pressure on staff in our office, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun along the way," he adds with a smile.
Jim's commitment to supporting his colleagues and the broader community extends beyond his daily duties. A former member of SLOCEA’s Board of Directors, Jim chose to continue his membership even after his promotion to management took him out of a SLOCEA-represented bargaining unit.
"There is power in a union," he asserts. "SLOCEA provides invaluable resources and support—from legal representation to scholarships—thanks to the unity of its members and the dedication of its staff."
As Jim looks ahead in his career, his dedication to public service and fostering a supportive work environment remains steadfast. His journey with the County of San Luis Obispo exemplifies the profound impact that a commitment to service and community can have, both within an organization and beyond. SLOCEA is grateful for his many years of service to this Association, and to his nearly three decades of service to the community of SLO County.
