Public Service Spotlight: Michael Tabares
Public Works, Division Manager-Road Maintenance
12/1994 - 30 years
This month, Mike Tabares celebrates the incredible milestone of 30 years with the County of San Luis Obispo! Reflecting on his journey, Mike says, “It’s pretty exciting, and I’ve been around for a long, long time.”
For 10 years, Mike worked for a private paving company in Santa Maria. An opportunity arose when a County division manager, in need of paving work at their home, contracted Mike’s company. Impressed with his skills, the manager asked if he had ever considered working for the County. Shortly after, Mike accepted a temporary position on the Tree Crew, stepping in for an employee out on medical leave- setting the stage for a long and impactful career.
His skills and work ethic quickly made an impression. When the employee he was filling in for returned to work, Mike’s supervisor and the Public Works Director agreed: “You can’t get rid of a guy like this,” and Mike joined the County team as a permanent employee.
Over the years, Mike has worn many hats, starting with the Tree Crew, then moving to the Roads Crew. But his favorite role? Equipment operator. “Driving and working on large projects with the motor grader and backhoe was a lot of fun, even if it was short-lived,” he recalls.
Today, Mike serves as the Roads Maintenance Division Manager, overseeing three County yards in Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo and managing a team of 57 employees. His leadership style prioritizes mentorship and teamwork.
“We have good, talented kids. I’d rather lead them than try to keep up with them,” he says with pride. From trimming trees to clearing and maintaining roads for public and emergency use, Mike ensures his team upholds the County’s commitment to safety and efficiency.
Mike is also a very proud family man. Married for 39 years to his high school sweetheart, Mike credits his wife as his greatest supporter. “She told me I was meant for this position, and here I am,” he says. Together, they have cherished raising their daughter, and will soon be celebrating her graduating college with a master’s degree.
Outside of work, Mike enjoys playing golf, with Morro Bay being his favorite course, and spending time watching the Dodger’s games. Yet, retirement is not on the horizon. “I still feel like I have some good years left in me,” he says.
Mike’s 30 years with the County have been marked by hard work, camaraderie, and a deep commitment to passing on knowledge to the next generation. Surrounded by a team he admires, and with no plans to slow down, Mike continues to make a lasting impact on the County of SLO. Congratulations, Mike, on 30 remarkable years!
