A Look Back at 2024

As 2024 nears its end, I reflect on a year filled with growth, progress, and new beginnings. For me, it has been an especially meaningful year as I near the completion of my first year as Executive Director. It’s been a privilege to serve our Members and work alongside such a dedicated SLOCPT team and Trustees. One of our key focuses this year has been ensuring the continued stability of SLOCPT throughout the transition phase.

A few of our key successes for 2024:

  • Published the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for 2023

  • Received a clean unmodified opinion for our 2023 financial statements

  • Completed and implemented the biennial Experience Study impacting our Actuarial Valuation

  • Reviewed the Investment Policy Statement and Procedures

  • Approved a reduced Administrative Budget

  • Began the first stages of revamping SLOCPT’s image including a soft rollout of our new logo

Despite an unpredictable economic landscape, the SLOCPT investment portfolio remained resilient providing downside protection and participating in up markets. We have continued the implementation of our strategic asset allocation in order to ensure financial stability in the future.

As we approach the end of the year, it’s a good time to revisit and review your plan for retirement.  Have you logged in to your MemberDirect account (members.slocpt.org)  and estimated your pension benefit in future years?  Is your beneficiary information up to date? Small steps now can make a big difference down the road, so we encourage you to take advantage of the tools and resources available to you. If you’re considering retirement in the coming years, our Retirement Program Specialists are here to help you navigate the process and answer any questions you may have.

Looking ahead to 2025, we’re excited to build on the momentum of this past year. We’ll be introducing new educational opportunities, revealing a new website, and developing new avenues of Membership communication. Our focus remains on delivering value to our Members and ensuring that SLOCPT remains a trusted partner throughout your retirement journey.

As the holidays approach, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you. This year has reinforced the tough decision I made to leave Oklahoma last year, and I am honored to lead an organization that plays such a vital role in supporting your retirement. Thank you for your trust, your engagement, and your commitment to making SLO County a wonderful place to live and retire.

From all of us at SLOCPT, we wish you a joyous holiday season filled with warmth and celebration. Here’s to a bright and prosperous 2025 – Cheers!
