SLOCEA Members Step Into New Leadership Roles
The full benefit of union membership can only be realized through active involvement. Three SLOCEA members stepped forward to get more involved and at the February 19th SLOCEA Board of Directors meeting they were appointed to serve in leadership positions. All three members are eager to bring information and resources to their coworkers and create a strong union presence in their worksite. We are pleased to introduce you to Vincent, Crystal and Ben!
NEW DIRECTOR
Vincent Corcoran moved to SLO County with an extensive background and began working for the Public Works Department in July 2023. As a Wastewater Systems Worker II Vincent is a member of the Trades, Crafts and Services bargaining unit and works at the high-tech Los Osos Water Recycling Facility.
Vincent has been eager from the start to serve the union and at a January 2024 site visit, inquired about serving as a Steward. Vincent needed to fulfill one year of SLOCEA membership first and was appointed to the Steward Committee on September 18, 2024.
On January 25, 2025, Vincent completed and submitted a candidate statement and Interest in Appointment to the Board of Directors for consideration to fill the vacant Trades Unit, Seat #10. Vincent was appointed to the Board at the February meeting and is eager to support his colleagues and SLOCEA especially throughout the collective bargaining cycle.
NEW STEWARD
Crystal Cullen has worked for the County since March 2021 and is an Animal Control Officer for Animal Services. We first met Crystal at a site visit in October 2024 at their impressive new facility out off Highway 1 on Oklahoma Avenue. Crystal has contacted our office over time making various inquiries and has twice won gift cards for “Finding Feathers” in the newsletter. At the beginning of this year Crystal contacted our office with an interest in serving SLOCEA as a Steward, with the intent to bring pertinent information to her coworkers. Crystal was appointed at the February meeting and is eager to learn more about SLOCEA to share among Animal Services.
NEW STEWARD
Ben Franco has worked for the County since January 2023 and is an Airports Maintenance Worker at another impressive SLO County facility, the County Regional Airport with its state-of-the-art terminal. Ben is a jack of all trades and as maintenance worker performs a wide variety of important functions for the Airport. We met Ben at a site visit in June 2024 and in January he contacted me for information on how to become a Steward. Ben has the overwhelming support of his colleagues and his enthusiasm to serve his coworkers is refreshing.
SLOCEA is only as strong as the involvement and engagement of our members. Thank you to Vincent, Crystal and Ben for stepping up to get involved in SLOCEA, and for working towards strengthening our membership through your involvement!
There are currently vacant seats on the SLOCEA Board of Directors and we are always seeking Stewards to serve work sites that are not represented. If you are interested in serving SLOCEA in a leadership capacity, please contact me at 805-543-2021 or by email: tschultz@slocea.org
